The History of the English Language

‘Do You Speak English?’




Probably the most used question in the hole world, it is, ‘Do you speak English?’. They might answer no; that’s the expected answer, but chances are they probably do speak some English too – common words, like, hello, good bye, weekend, holiday, etc. All this are derived from English words.



English is not as pure as we may think. English language has changed by the pass of the centuries, and it will continue changing, for example, if we look at the Champers Dictionary edition, compared to ones from 25 years back. The fact that the island of England has been coveted by civilizations and invaded so many times, its fluent with the change of English throughout the years.

The major English change, was when the Vikings came and conquered England. They passed words from their language to English language. Some of this words are ‘house, ocean, boat.’, do you even know how they were called before that? Later on, the Romans invaded England, they brought even more words to English language! For some time, Latin became the main language of scholars and educated people. People without money, would speak in their own dialects.

Later on, other rules from Spain came, and Spanish words were interjected into our language. By the pass of the time, many of this words became varied to become ‘English’ . Most of the words we use now, have European origin.

This derives largely from our days of Empire, where, India as an example, English became the Language of the upper classes and was taught to children as a main second language, eventually, for some, becoming the only language which people from every region could communicate in.

English its spoken different around the world, depending on the culture and nationality. They change terms of spelling, like an example, America, spells realise as realize.

English it’s a mix from other languages, but it still being the second most common language in the world. By the pass of the years, English has become the business language, and the language in which you can communicate in the world. The history of English is still being written. More words are being used every day, because technological advances.
